Dominic is a newcomer to competitive cycling. In 1994 he sustained a severe brain injury while working out in Cyprus. He fell off a moped (without a helmet !!!) and was taken to hospital where Doctors said if he awoke out of the coma that he was in, he would never walk or talk again. Since that time a lot of people have stated that the talking bit might not have been too bad !!!.

He did come out of the coma after about 3 months, and after a lot of hard work, determination and help several years later he was able to get to a fitness level to go back to the gym. Then one day he was out with his girlfriend. They decided to hire bikes (wearing helmets this time) Even though he thought he wouldn’t be able to do it, he got on and do you know what? It was just like riding a bike.

Back at the gym he worked on the exercise bikes and got fit enough to be able to do 50 and a 100 mile sponsored cycle rides on his mountain bike (slowly). He also started doing 12 hour supermarket bike’a’thons. This culminated in 2006 when he did Le Tour de Asda. The tour de France – 2,261 miles in 23 days but on exercise bikes in the foyer or local Asda’s. For this they raised over £11,000.

On the last leg of Le Tour de Asda in Rotherham Asda, a man came in and saw him, and he was a GB Paralympics coach and told Dom to get in touch with the cycling section.

He did just that and was asked down for an international classification at the Manchester Veledrome complex, then invited to enter the British Championships Road Race for disabilities, and to enter other races.

Problem was Dominic didn't have a proper road bike. He had a mountain bike but no racing bike. JE James in Rotherham have been brilliant for him. The sponsored Dom a very good racing bike and have made any changes that he has gone in and asked for, and given him very good discount on anything he’s bought.
Dom started entering a few races, but to no avail. What with illness, punctures, potholes and a general lack of speed he’s yet to finish one. Dom moved into Time Trials with the Ruby Project Time Trials. These have not yet gone to well for him yet but they have got better each time and he’s even won a pair of socks in one race !!! So now in the winter he has to do some serious training and not just get his fitness up but get some speed to match.
