Rob Watkinson Approx 1 hour 17 miles brisk from Braithwell The following ride can be used as part of a longer effort or a short spin on its own. With 90% of it on quite roads, mostly rolling but with a few steep bits and a technical downhill section to keep you on your toes. A good starting point is the café in Braitwelll village just north of Maltby. From here ride north for a few hundred metres up the rise through the village to the crossroads. Take the right next to the post office on the corner and onto the narrow lane which heads in a north easterly direction. After about a mile you reach a cross roads. Turn right onto the road towards Stainton. A well known road to local cyclist as this forms part of the circuit for many local road races. As you rise up towards the top of the slight rise in the road you will see the finish line still painted on the road. If you’re feeling frisky have a sprint to the line to get yourself warmed up. Over the rise past the quarry until you drop down to Stainton. Here turn left through the village, under the railway bridge onto the windy lane towards the main road. After a mile or two you will reach the A631 to Tickhill. Turn left and ride up the rise for about half a mile to the top. Just a few months ago this hill was the scene for a hill prime in the Tour of Britain. Turn right at the top (careful as cars come over the brow quite fast) onto a lane again. After 50 yards you come to a junction. Straight on here down Blyth gate lane. A great road if you get a tailwind to pick some speed up and fly down the gradual descent. Towards South Wongs farm at the bottom and finally the t junction onto the A60. Turn right here towards Oldcoates. Drop it into the 39 as you take the short climb through the trees. About 600 yards over the hill take the right hand turn onto a narrow lane known as Thornbury hill. A gradual climb for about a mile past the farm at the top and a swift twisty descent towards the main road. Watch out for grouse and pheasant down here as they are bred for hunting in these parts. Take the right onto the main road (A634) towards Maltby. You are only on this road for about 400 metres before turning left towards the old village of Firbeck. Firbeck hall lies behind the trees on your left just over the hump back bridge. Taking the 90 degrees right hander past the pub in the village climb gently through the village and back out onto a narrow lane. About a mile out of the village you will get a great view of Lingodell farm which is an impressive house and garden estate. The road snakes its way up towards Laughton en le morthern. The steeple of the church is recognisable from miles off and you will soon see it on the horizon. Once in Laughton and you reach the T junction, turn right climbing towards the junction in the village centre (a corner shop on your left). Take the right turn and prepare for a swift descent in excess off 40mph. This is a great downhill section a pretty straight, dropping towards Slade Hooton. You’ll need to quickly drop down the gears as you climb through the village and out towards Maltby on High Hooton Road. This roads a bit of a roller coaster for 2 miles, no flat just up or down but nothing severe. Before Maltby you will ride into the trees at Hooton Levitt and make the swift decent down Carr Lane. A hairpin bend will face you at the top, Tour de France stylie. Down Carr lane past the ironmongers at the bottom before reaching the A631 at Maltby. This is a busy road so take care when turning right. After about 600 metres take the left up the rise onto the B6376 towards Braithwell, past Maltby swimming baths on your right. A winding, rolling road will face you for the next mile or two towards Braithwell. Once there treat yourself to a cuppa in the café.
